I had a "white van" approach me while I was sitting in the drive thru at a Wendys. I guess because I was in my Z28 they figured I was into "high end stereos"

ahahahaha no thanks

Ever ran into this scam?

A guy came into our bodyshop one day and said his brother worked at Sears and they had to get rid of some big screen tv's ASAP. They were supposed to be $1200 Tvs for $400. The scammer got $1600 out of some of the guys and said to meet him at the loading dock behind Sears in 20 minutes. We took two trucks down there and nobody was around. Even though it sounded to good to be true we figured the guy was legit when he mentioned he was a buddy of a guy we all new at the dealership across the way. We went over to the dealership and the guy over there new nothin about it. DOH!

I bought a pair in 1979 from some guys in a white van when i was working at a body shop to finish payment on a 69 L78 Camaro. The van was full of new speakers in boxes. They had a tag on them that said "RAL Research acoustic Labratories". I forget but the price must have been fairly good. They sounded great and just shit the bed a couple of years ago.

When approached by those types I give them a hard look and tell them to keep on going,I'm not interested in getting hustled or having to shoot some fool if he steps out of line.

I had forgotten about the old white van back in the day but after Katrina there were guys running around here with trailers of generators and stuff trying to pass them off as government surplus that didn't get used by FEMA.

Red face Re: How old is this scam?

Yes, got a great deal on four extra concert speakers from a newly built Branson, Mo. auditorium in mid 90's. Brand new for something like 400.oo (bargain!) It's party time ! Hooked to 250 amp receiver the night of bash.(hero!) No sound from one, little from two, one o.k. This is where from hero to asshole applies. Still laugh about it.

Reminds me of the guy that sells cameras in parking lots back in Houston. Every week he had a new story about how he was in desperate need, (wife, kids, mother needed surgery and he had to get enough money to get back to oklahoma, vegas, new orleans) and a brand new never been outta the box camera.

Just last week my girlfriend and I were about to walking in a local shopping center and 2 guys in an expedition asked us the same thing. They said " we work for a contractor installing home surround sound systems, we got an extra one from a job and would like to sell it. You can buy it for $150." We declined and laughed as they drove to the next lane and stopped someone else.

These guys came up to me a few years ago... In a white expedition as well... I could smell they were drinking, they were trying to sell me some $2000 home theater speakers. they wanted $400 I believe. I told them I only have $60 on me. They sold them to me.... They look really nice, the sound is good, the sub shakes the house a little bit. Not a bad deal, they still work great today

Had it happen twice in the past year. One was because he "had an extra one and didn't want to take it back to work" and the other was two guys in an Astro van, except that one was FREE. I still didn't take it...probably stolen. Did sound legit though..the guy even had the order form with him.

I think they use that same tactic "had an extra one" when they show up at your door trying to sell you beef as well from those little trucks you see running around everywhere. Last guy who showed up said "all your neighbors have taken advantage of this deal so you should too " and "we were delivering in the area but one person wasn't home so we have a whole extra side of beef" .
